In a recent article in the newsroom, we reported how a journalist named Margaux Blanchard was, in fact, a completely fictional character who, obviously, artificially generated her own articles, repeatedly deceiving several newspapers, including Business Insider and Wired.
The former subsequently stated that it had to remove more than 40 articles from its archive because they had been created by AI and were therefore unreliable. Following the news, the Washington Post and the Daily Beast investigated the matter, discovering that “Margaux Blanchard” is part of a larger operation aimed at deceiving the media and misleading public opinion through artificially generated content.
The texts in question should have been identified by editors, given the various inconsistencies they contained. However, following a series of redundancies at Business Insider due to the automation of various processes, it is not surprising that no human eye had the opportunity to recognise the problem.
