Facial recognition technologies are becoming more effective by the day, reaching worrying levels. Several people involved in activism and protests have begun to cover their faces or apply make-up to make recognition more difficult. The intention is not to hide, but to prevent their presence at one event or another from compromising their position in areas where different opinions prevail.

Following recent protests against the mass deportation ordered by US President Donald Trump, the Immigration and Customs Office (ICE) has decided to invest $9,225,000 in a contract with Clearview AI, a controversial company specialising in facial recognition services. The move stemmed from the need for law enforcement to identify individuals who might attack agency officials, despite reports to the contrary.

As explained in a recent article in this newsroom, several protesters were attacked by ICE agents, who then turned to AI to implement the same move, but with a different service.
