Every person is free to frequent the places they prefer, participate in the events that most appeal to them, and fight for what they believe in; fundamentally, a human being's freedom should never be questioned. However, each of our choices inevitably construct a narrative that describes us, a narrative that, unfortunately, may not be appreciated by those who hold positions of power greater than that of any normal person.

The topic of “Pride” comes up every summer, with the month of June serving as a bastion of remembrance for the struggles of the past to allow everyone to express themselves without fear for their lives or the safety of their loved ones. Although this celebration is often used as a marketing strategy by large companies, there are places that offer safe and secure environments for anyone who is part of the LGBT community.

The Kilted Mermaid in Florida, for example, is one such place. In 2025, after years of fighting discrimination, you'd expect to be able to go to an LGBT bar without worrying about legal repercussions. But the state attorney general's office asked for the guest list and surveillance footage after a drag event.
