Vtubers, or “Virtual YouTubers,” are content creators who engage in streaming using avatars, usually reminiscent of Japanese animation style, instead of their own appearance. The term was coined in 2016 following the debut of Kizuna AI, considered the first true Vtuber in history. The practice has become increasingly popular, leading to the creation of talent agencies to invest in various creators in the industry.
The American agency VSHOJO, founded in 2020, falls within this definition, however, with an important clarification from the founders themselves: the company boasts a “talent-first” approach, as it primarily claims to provide resources and support to its talents. The agency ceased operations in July 2025, following a series of serious allegations made by one of its Vtubers: Ironmouse.
The creator in question had dedicated time and effort to raising funds for the Immune Deficiency Foundation, only to discover, during the current year, that VShojo had not only suspended payments to the agency's talents, but had also withheld and allegedly used the half a million dollars raised by Ironmouse for the aforementioned charity for other interests.
