On August 25, 2025, any link generated with Google's URL shortening tool will become obsolete. The tool in question was discontinued back in 2019, but the addresses created using it have remained functional until now. At the time, the company justified its decision to discontinue the service due to “changes identified in the way users use the internet.”

Considering the reduction in traffic within the links involved, Google announced its decision in 2024, warning the owners of these addresses that they would soon be discontinued. Towards the end of next August, therefore, a large number of websites will become obsolete, presenting visitors with the typical 404 error message.

Today's article is intended as a reminder for anyone who has a link generated using this tool; with the service soon to be discontinued, it may be wise to move your URL to another shortening tool.
