Over the past year, the world's most popular browser has decided to introduce a feature powered by artificial intelligence. When you perform a search on Google, you now get results from a feature called “AI Overview,” a kind of dialogue box that appears as the first response to any question entered in the search bar.

According to research on this topic, since the implementation of this feature, and therefore of an AI overview as the first result following a search, the average click rate has been 34.5% lower for the page with the highest ranking—despite one of the original statements made about AI Overviews emphasizing that this feature would increase traffic to the sites proposed by the browser.

On May 20, 2025, Sundar Pichai, Google's CEO, officially announced the next step in this feature: AIMode. The new mode will be completely managed by artificial intelligence and, instead of providing individual results that lead to different web pages, the browser's chatbot will generate an article in response to the question asked.
