British multinational Marks & Spencer recently fell victim to a serious cyber attack. About a month ago, the London-based retailer was targeted by unknown agents intent on stealing private customer data - including phone numbers, dates of birth and residential addresses. According to Stuart Machin, the CEO of M&S, there is currently no evidence that the stolen information was shared.

This does not mean, however, that the data in question will not be disclosed at a later date in a potential extortion attempt against the company. The latter advised the users to change their passwords, after reporting the attack to the appropriate authorities. In addition, it has enlisted the support of a team of cybersecurity experts so that any consequences can be brought under control.

The attack hit Marks & Spencer on this particular occasion, but several companies specializing in retail have been targeted recently.
