We recently had occasion to mention the Government Accountability Office (GAO), an investigative branch of the U.S. federal government that reports directly to Congress. As the supreme oversight institution of the entire nation, it is known as the “watchdog” of the state and is responsible for maintaining integrity, accountability and reliability.
In a report released in late April and authored by the GAO, the current path taken by artificial intelligence will inevitably lead to enormous long-term costs to both society and the environment. The intent of the 47-page document is to summarize and clearly explain to lawmakers what researchers have been trying to communicate for years.
The foundation needed to support the development and use of artificial intelligence currently represents a huge sacrifice for the planet. The continued lack of transparency by AI companies regarding water use is just one example of the shortcuts currently taken by companies.
