Recently, the U.S. Government Accountability Office, a nonpartisan watchdog group dedicated to investigating the federal government and its actions, released a report regarding the Pentagon's sudden push toward artificial intelligence. Titled “Defense Command and Control,” the document focuses on the proposed integration of this technology within the military's work processes.

According to the report, the U.S. military body reportedly stated that “through advanced artificial intelligence tools in the future,” it may be able to leverage this resource to identify targets at the rate of 5,000 per day, as opposed to 50 currently. Simply put, the intention would be to implement more use of AI to distinguish targets on the battlefield, leaving the decision of an individual's life or death in the imaginary hands of a system.

The prospect of possible “killer robots” seems less abstract in the face of these recent statements.
