The desire to know, to gain knowledge and delve into what might seem inaccessible is a fundamental human characteristic. Investigating an individual's lineage, studying their past and those who have existed before, are rather complex research processes, activities beyond the reach of most people.
In the past decade, however, a number of companies have sprung up whose purpose was just that: through a DNA sample provided by the client, the research team was supposedly able to trace their lineage, subsequently providing information regarding genetic traits, diseases, and potential kinship ties.
23andMe, a company specializing in this field, recently filed for bankruptcy. In such cases, the fate of the countless data collected does not seem particularly prosperous, as they are inevitably destined to end up in the hands of the next buyer. Whether the latter's intentions are noble or not is still unknown.
