According to a set of procurement documents obtained by 404 Media, the news outlet responsible for today's referenced article, NASA allegedly paid for access to Clearview AI's “Investigator Tool + Cloud Database.” The documents in question, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), state that the agency originally purchased only a license to use the technology, however, they do not explicitly explain the reason for this purchase.
Clearview AI is a somewhat controversial artificial intelligence, as the company that owns it has come under the spotlight for being the first to allow third parties to search for a person's face and then link it to his or her online activities, such as social media profiles, mug shots and other open sources.
The project is proposed as an OSINT (open source intelligence) platform that can provide support through the identification of persons of interest during relevant investigation processes. Users have access to a database of more than 50 billion images.
