In recent years, the unpleasant practice of hacking in the medical sector has spread exponentially: digital extortion seems to be the order of the day for those working in health care. Hospitals, clinics, and private practitioners are increasingly being targeted, considering the vast amount of sensitive data they guard for each and every patient being treated, currently or otherwise.

Recently, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon was sued by a small group of patients previously treated at his practice. They report that Dr. Schwartz failed to alert them to a theft of their data by a group of hackers, who subsequently posted the stolen data and images online. Within a month of the breach of his network, the surgeon still had not acted to resolve the situation.

Within a year, the surgeon in question was the victim of two data thefts due to his negligence in cyber protection. More precisely, the hackers in question managed to steal nearly 250,000 files containing private health information.
