The last week of January saw the unexpected release of Deepseek, a Chinese artificial intelligence model that immediately sent the US tech industry into a panic. The interesting novelty offered by this model, in fact, lies in its being completely free and far cheaper to maintain than its American competitors.

Following its release, big names in the industry took care to investigate the production of this model, interested in knowing as much information as possible about their competitor - as well as rather suspicious of this immediate fame. OpenAI and Microsoft, more precisely, launched an investigation aimed at discovering a possible illicit use of certain data generated by OpenAI itself.

During the autumn of 2024, security researchers at Microsoft allegedly detected unusual attempts to access a vast amount of data via the OpenAI API - considering what happened, the company suspects that Deepseek used this information during the development of its own model.
