As mentioned in a recent article shared in our newsroom, Meta decided to abandon the use of fact-checkers within its platforms, exactly as X had decided in recent months. The company subsequently decided to implement ‘Community Notes’, anonymous comments explaining the accuracy (or otherwise) of a certain post, as an alternative.
According to one fact-checker, Zuckerberg's decision stemmed from a desire to curry favor with the new president, Donald Trump. Faced with this change, however, Europe is not particularly enthusiastic about the abandonment of professional figures such as fact-checkers, relegating responsibility for the veracity of published posts to other users.
According to Meta's CEO in a recent press release, the company has no intention of removing the practice of fact-checking within the European Union, considering the law on the continent.
