The UK Office of Communications, known as Ofcom, is a government-approved regulatory authority responsible for communications within the nation. Recently, the institution published a series of codes of conduct aimed at regulating and managing illegal online content by companies.
The new Online Safety Act (OSA) regulations will come into effect on 16 March 2025, meaning that companies potentially involved in sharing illegal content have three months to check and possibly remove the offending content. Otherwise, they could be fined up to 10% of their global turnover.
The current situation requires a certain amount of accountability from the companies involved. This last chance offers a precise time frame to make companies aware of what the users of their products might encounter when using the different platforms: in the event of exposure to illegal content, then, the correct action will have to be taken.
