Hurricane Helene Knocked One of the World’s Largest Climate Data Archives Offline.

The United States of America is in a rather serious situation: the hurricane season has only just begun and has already caused considerable damage to industrial facilities, private homes and entire cities. Several evacuation orders have been issued and followed by those in a position to do so - however, several families now find themselves without access to their homes.

Hurricane Helene seems, in fact, to have paved the way for Milton, its successor currently engaged in the destruction of the state of Florida. During the first days of October 2024, in fact, the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) was offline for days following the passage of Hurricane Helene. The huge data repository in question is based in Asheville, North Carolina, and was one of the last places touched by Hurricane Helene in the last week of September.

The damage caused by these disastrous weather conditions is extensive, described as ‘biblical’. Experienced meteorologists have shared their studies and opinions on the subject, explaining the enormous risk the USA is currently facing.
