Myriads of British, American, Australian and Canadian teenagers will soon be forced to submit to the new rules of one of today's most loved and popular social networks: Instagram. The software, now owned by Meta, has announced that it will soon introduce a new account category, dedicated exclusively to teenage users.
The news broke following the Australian government's recent intention to introduce new legislation regarding the use of social media. In order to safeguard the psychological health of young people, the government has proposed raising the minimum age for social media access to 14-16 years old; an idea that might seem exaggerated to the average user today.
Meta, in response, announced the introduction of the aforementioned, pointing out some of the features implemented for these new profiles: there will be a ban preventing adults from sending messages to teens who are not following them, the silencing of notifications during the night (two features already available), and the impossibility of changing these settings independently - should an attempt be made to change them, parents will have the possibility of blocking access to the app during the night, as well as being able to view the messages exchanged by the ‘teen’ account and insert new time limits.
