California State Senator Scott Wiener recently received an unexpected letter. Famous for introducing SB 1047, also known as the ‘Safe and Secure Innovation for Frontier Artificial Intelligence Models Act’, the intent of this bill is to establish general standards before proceeding with the development of more powerful and high-performance AI models.
The letter in question, written by OpenAI executive Jason Kwon, emphasises, however, that regulation of this technology should be the responsibility of the federal government - it also states that the new Californian law in question could slow down progress within the sector and cause companies to leave the state.
The senator, in response, specifies that the law applies to any company doing business in California, regardless of location - thus addressing Kwon's concern.
