OpenAI opens Tokyo hub, adds GPT-4 model optimized for Japanese.

The beginning of the week marked OpenAI's arrival in Japan with the recent opening of a new office in Tokyo. To expand their business within Japanese land, a GPT-4 model specifically optimised for the Japanese language was announced.

For the first time since the release of the artificial intelligence in question, OpenAI was faced with a complex consequence: as the business expands, it is necessary to implement the localisation of its technology into different languages. In Asia, this requires the addition of a much more complex and nuanced set of alphabets than the Western standard.

The reason behind the expansion into Japan, according to the CEO, lies in the history of people and technology coming together to do more - according to a more opportunistic view, however, it is possible to recognise that the company's expansionary efforts to date have been rather strategic.
