Ransomware attack on indie game maker wiped all player accounts

The old-style MMORPG "Ethyrial: Echoes of Yore" recently fell victim to a serious ransomware attack. The game, released in early-access in the first half of 2023, is aimed at an audience of intrepid and adventurous gamers ready to face civil wars and monsters for the achievement of a golden age.

The independent company behind the game, Gellyberry Studios, was targeted during the morning of last Friday. As communicated on the developers' discord server, the ill-intentioned individuals behind the crime directly attacked the game's main server, encrypting all data and demanding a bitcoin payment in exchange for the decryption key.

Not trusting the culprits, the developers decided to restore the data manually. The hope is to be able to recover the accounts of 17,000 players, now without in-game saves and characters.
