On September 19, 2023, George R.R. Martin and 16 other authors involved in the production of the Game Of Thrones phenomenon turned to the prestigious Authors' Guild, which, heading to the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of New York, filed a lawsuit against the OpenAI company. More specifically, the allegation concerns the company's unauthorized use of copyrighted works to improve ChatGPT's functionality.
The lawsuit states that OpenAI obtained books from various unauthorized eBook archives and integrated them into the core of ChatGPT. Justifiably, the authors involved demand an immediate cessation of the misuse of their works, as well as the payment of monetary and legal damages - which could amount up to $150,000 per work.
This development has stirred other authors in the field, who are motivated to follow Martin's example and build an alliance to protect their intellectual rights.
