The Associated Press, a pillar of standards for the news industry, has issued guidelines regarding generative AI and dedicated to its journalists, urging company staff not to use ChatGPT to create publishable content.
The introduction of AI is not a replacement for the journalism profession in any way, argues Amanda Barrett, the company's vice president. As is now well established, AI is to be used as a tool to support the professional, not to take his or her place.
AP journalists can experiment with ChatGPT, but are urged to use caution and not to use the tool to create content for publication; that said, it is possible to treat what the service generates as a source from which to produce publishable text.
