As mentioned in other articles, the potential use of deepfakes does not stop at simple, albeit extremely harmful, revenge porn; rather, it is now being used for disinformation and serious political and social threats.
It is not new that malicious actors use content manipulation technologies and services, exploiting at will photos and videos captured from an individual's social media account - to create sexually themed images that appear plausible to the victim, and then circulate them on social media, public forums or pornographic websites. This problem is deeply real and present in the online lives of thousands of people.
"Do we have the capability to detect deepfakes?" an FBI official from the Operational Technology Division (OTD), which deals with advanced technical issues such as hacking tools, asked in a 2018 email.
"No," was the reply from another official in the division.
