Anti-Homeless Mayoral Candidate Uses AI to Create Fake Images of 'Blight'

Toronto mayoral candidate Anthony Furey says the problem of homelessness is real, although his campaign images are not. His conservative platform proposes increased policing of tent encampments, the dismantling of bike lanes, and the addition of 500 police officers.

Furthermore, the candidate's campaign focuses on forcibly removing the previously named tent encampments, without mentioning any way to help people access permanent housing.

To give substance to his proposal, Furey decided to use AI to generate images of Toronto streets depicting hundreds of homeless people. This dubious approach is nothing new; in the past year, candidates around the world have acted in similar ways, rightly fuelling criticism that AI is being used to spread misinformation.
