We recently referred to an article about an eating disorder helpline, which had decided to replace its human staff following a series of their more than legitimate requests. The replacement was due to take place at the end of last month, and 'Tessa', an Artificial Intelligence in the form of a chatbot, was to become the new reference figure for users.
Well, the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) moved the infamous 'Tessa' offline, only two days before the aforementioned replacement was supposed to take place. This change came about following a viral post illustrating how the chatbot was encouraging unhealthy eating habits rather than helping a person with an eating disorder. 'Every single thing Tessa suggested was the cause of the development of my eating disorder. This robot causes damage'.
Perhaps it is not appropriate to entrust to Artificial Intelligences professions closely related to the emotional sphere. Perhaps.
