According to reports in the South China Morning Post, Chinese authorities have arrested a man who allegedly used ChatGPT to generate and share fake news about a train crash that killed nine people.
This appears to be the first arrest in China related to the misuse of artificial intelligence. The case was conducted by investigators who discovered that Hong, the criminal in question, was inserting elements of viral stories from recent years into ChatGPT to produce different versions of the same fake story and then uploading it to his accounts on Baijiahao, a blog-style platform that is extremely popular in the country.
AI-generated disinformation is not exclusive to China: various AI experts, social media companies, and government officials in the US, and the rest of the world, are equally concerned about the fake news dissemination and creation capabilities that seem to characterise AI these days.
