The Writers Guild of America is on strike after six weeks of negotiations with major entertainment companies such as Netflix, Amazon, Apple and Disney. The strike in question is the first in Hollywood in 15 years: for the first time ever, screenwriters are negotiating the studios' use of generative artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT.
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers was only able to provide half-responses to the writers' demands, specifying that 'annual meetings will be held regarding the development of generative Artificial Intelligence', rather than removing the use of the service.
The problem is clear: the desire to use artificial intelligence to do the writers' work is a symptom of the broader problem the corporation is fighting for, namely that companies do not value writers and their work.
