NFTs quickly went from boom to predictable bust. By the end of 2022, about a year and a half after the initial explosion, marketplaces had closed or lost almost all of their value.
That said, it is important to emphasise that the failure of NFTs in no way negates the blockchain - the underlying technology that makes NFTs unique and traceable - as an artistic space. It existed before and will surely be explored by various artists in the future as well. We find ourselves at the perfect moment to recall the decade-long history of digital art and entice new artists to take this path.
What characterises and unites many of the artists in this environment, no matter how different their aesthetics may be, is a balance of curiosity and scepticism towards the digital, a quality absent among the excesses of NFT.
